Nigeria’s World Cruiserweight Boxing Champion, Bash Ali has called on the presidency to sanction the Youths and Sports Minister, Solomon Dalung for incompetence, bad governance and corruption.

Bash Ali made the call in Abuja at the peaceful protest staged by the Bash Ali Boxing Project’s Local Organising Committee (LOC) at the entrance of the Ministry of Youths and Sports complex on Monday.

The champion and the LOC alleged that the Minister of Youths and Sports due to bad administration and corruption has failed to meet the deadline of the International Boxing Union (IBU) to write a letter of assurance of safety for its 170 member countries.

And also to pay the sum of 100 million USD to facilitate the bash Ali Boxing Project which will give the champ the opportunity to become Africa’s oldest boxer to win the Guinness Book of Records title.

Speaking with Watchdog news, the champ said the plan for the project began since 2006 when the then Federal Government inaugurated a LOC that will facilitate and plan for the realiisation of his quest to which he said will not only make him the World’s oldest GWR champion, but also boost the image of Nigeria before the international community as well as proffer opportunities for young Nigerians and adults to become world Athletes Champions.

According to Ali, the IBU directed that Nigeria should meet the deadline on or before July 15, 2016 or face the consequence of losing the hosting right to Germany as well as removing him as the contender for the title or be removed from further ratings.

He also said that the IBU further extended the deadline to the 10th of March, 2017 due to unforeseen delay and change of leadership of Nigeria as well as the Sport’s ministry.

Champ said that unfortunately, the deadline was not met due to corruption and bad governance of the Dalung led administration.
When asked to shed light on these allegations, Ali explained that Dalung refused to process the released of the funds domiciled in the Central Bank of Nigeria by Nexim bank and Bank of Industry (BOI) for the purpose of organising the event in Nigeria.

The Champ also alleged that Dalung refused to obey the directives of the federal government which mandated him to meet every Friday with the members of the LOC to deliberate issues and make the historic event realizable.

Ali said that the minister only arranged for a meeting since he assumed office in November, 2015 and excluded him and other members of the LOC on the basis that he, Ali had out-rightly refused to give 30 percent of the 500 million USD profit estimated to be generated at the end of the event. He added that Dalung asked him to “Do the right thing so that the fight cost would be released.

He however said because of his refusal, he has paid dearly for for it by being molested, three times detained and charged to court like a criminal for not doing the wrong thing.

Thus, he said he is calling on the presidency through the Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo to sanction Dalung by removing him for incompetence and corruption.

Saying that this has set the Sports ministry backward in terms of development.

Meanwhile, efforts to reach the minister or his spokesman proved abortive as at the time of filing this report.
